Stock market holiday today: The stock market will be closed today, Monday 20 May. There will be no trading on BSE and NSE today due to Lok Sabha General Elections. Both the benchmark Indian equity markets BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty will remain closed on Monday, May 20, 2024.

According to BSE website, Equity, Equity Derivatives and SLB and Currency segments will remain closed on Monday. The stock market will open on Tuesday, May 21. May 20 is a stock market holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. It recognizes the importance of citizen participation in the electoral process.

The stock markets will remain closed on May 20 as the polling for Lok Sabha Elections 2024 will be held in Mumbai on this day. Polling will be held in all 6 Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai under the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Dhule, Dindori, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane, Mumbai North, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North East, Mumbai South, Mumbai South Central, Mumbai North Central and Palghar Lok Sabha constituencies are voting today.

As per the Election Commission announcement, the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra were to be held in five phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13 and May 20. After this general election holiday, the next stock market holiday will be ‘Bakri Eid’ on 17th June 2024 (Monday). In the rest of the calendar year 2024 there will be 7 more holidays after the Lok Sabha election holidays.
