Google Doodle on Thursday celebrated the ‘accordion, a German musical instrument patented in 1829 and referred to as the folk musician’s “main squeeze”. Bellows or free-reed instruments have influenced a variety of musical styles, including pop, jazz, folk, and classical.

As highlighted by Google Doodle, the word “accordion” comes from the German word akkord (chord). Among free-reed instruments, the accordion was developed in the early 1800s, along with other instruments such as the concertina, bandoneon, and harmonium.

The musical theme of the doodle features a banana gathered in the curls of an accordion and the Kelela “Google” logo, with performers dressed in traditional German garb dancing to its tunes.

Google Doodles are temporary changes to the Google logo, created to commemorate local and global themes such as philosophy, important dates, and influential people who have made significant contributions to society.
More about accordion here
The accordion is a portable free-reed instrument consisting of a treble section with piano-style keys and a bass section, usually equipped with buttons. These components are attached to the arms against the hand driven pulley.

– As Google Doodle explains, in the late 19th century, German manufacturers increased accordion production to meet the growing demand among European folk musicians.

– Initially, accordions had buttons on a single side, each producing a complete chord. Depending on whether Ghungru is Dhakle or Odhle Gele, the same buttons can create two different chords.

– Due to the spread of European immigrants globally, the accordion became widely used in various musical styles. Contemporary accordions may be equipped with either a single button or a piano keyboard, and some models include both.

– Nowadays, the accordion is popular in styles such as folk music, Latino polka, tango and Cajun music. It is a central part of Oktoberfest, a festive event known for its carnival atmosphere, music and traditional costumes such as Dirndls and lederhosen.
