International Yoga Day 2024: Every year on June 21, the whole world comes together to celebrate International Yoga Day. This global phenomenon recognizes the ancient Indian yoga practice and its profound impact on physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj”, which means “to join” or “to unite”, and it symbolizes the philosophy of bringing harmony in mind, body and spirit. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, “The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’, which means ‘to join’ or ‘to connect’ or ‘to unite’. In September 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). During his speech, he proposed to celebrate International Yoga Day every year.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the well-being benefits of yoga and its holistic approach to health. He suggested June 21 as the ideal date for the celebration, as it holds significance in many cultures and is the day of the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

The proposal gained momentum and the United Nations passed a resolution in December 2014 officially declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day. At the same time, a record-breaking 175 member countries supported the proposal.
