Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy. After Canada’s allegations against India for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, all eyes were on this meeting of the two leaders. After meeting PM Modi, Trudeau talked about improving relations, but a different picture has emerged from the Canadian Parliament.
A minute’s silence was observed in the Canadian Parliament for Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a terrorist associated with the Khalistan Tiger Force organization. In the House of Commons, first Speaker Greg Fergus read out a condolence message about Nijjar and then asked all MPs to observe silence for Nijjar.
Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said that it was an opportunity to discuss issues related to economic relations and national security with the new government of India. He said this after meeting PM Modi in the G7.
Trudeau said that the best thing about the G7 summit is that you get the opportunity to connect directly with global leaders on a large scale. You also get the opportunity to meet the heads of states of countries with whom you have disagreements on some issues, including India. There is a relationship between the people of India and Canada, which is a very important economic relationship.
He said that our people-to-people relationship with India is very deep. There is agreement on many big issues on which we need to work as a global community and as a democracy. There are many big issues on which we need to work. Now elections have been held in India. In such a situation, I think there is an opportunity to discuss some very serious issues like national security and the safety of Canadian citizens.
When asked whether there has been improvement in the direction of getting cooperation from India in the investigation of the murder of Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia, Trudeau said that work is being done in this direction.
